Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker) è una moglie, una madre, una donna in carriera ed evidentemente è dotata di abilità paranormali per come riesce a tenere tutto in equilibrio. La sua vita è frenetica, ma ha un marito fantastico, Richard (Greg Kinnear), un architetto che di recente si è messo in proprio, due figli adorabili, Emily (Emma Rayne Lyle), che sta per compiere sei anni, e Ben (Theodore e Julius Goldberg), un bambino che la adora. Kate è anche una donna che ama il suo lavoro. È la responsabile degli investimenti nella filiale di Boston di una società finanziaria di New York, lavoro che spesso la porta a viaggiare, cosa che le complica non poco la sua vita familiare.
