Ambientata nella New York degli anni sessanta, la serie tratta della vita di alcuni pubblicitari che lavorano per l'agenzia Sterling Cooper di Madison Avenue e si concentra sul dirigente e creativo Don Draper. L'ambientazione storica della serie ritrae i cambiamenti sociali in atto negli Stati Uniti all'inizio degli anni sessanta, con sullo sfondo la campagna presidenziale che contrappose John Kennedy a Richard Nixon.
Mad Men ha ricevuto un notevole riscontro da parte della critica e ha vinto in due edizioni consecutive (2008 e 2009) il Golden Globe per la miglior serie drammatica, mentre il protagonista Jon Hamm ha ottenuto nel 2008 il Golden Globe per il miglior attore in una serie drammatica.
