Per la prima regia di fantascienza, Margheriti sceglie una storia che esalta l'intelligenza dell'uomo sulla macchina. Non compaiono in questo film extraterrestri e in rotta di collisione con la Terra non è un pianeta ma un'astronave.
Margheriti ambienta la storia interamente nello spazio (tranne l'iniziale scena della partenza da Terra di un'astronave) e, per le sequenze degli astronauti nel vuoto, preferisce girare in bianco e nero (poi virato di tonalità azzurro-verde) non sapendo - come lui stesso ha spiegato - se nello spazio esistono i colori.
Il film è distribuito in America dall'AIP con il titolo Assignment Outer Space.
