DESCRIPTION

Nord Dakota, 1823: il trapper Hugh Glass, assunto come guida per una battuta di caccia alla ricerca di pelli e pellicce, sfugge a un attacco di indiani Arikara, durante il quale comunque vengono uccisi 33 uomini della spedizione. Con lui si salvano una dozzina di uomini, tra cui anche il figlio adolescente Hawk, avuto dalla moglie, una donna Pawnee, uccisa anni prima durante un attacco di soldati americani al loro villaggio indiano. Preoccupati dal fatto che gli indiani siano sulle loro tracce, gli uomini abbandonano la barca su cui stanno ridiscendendo il fiume, nascondono le pelli salvate dall'attacco degli indiani e decidono di tornare al loro villaggio a piedi, preferendo la prospettiva di settimane di cammino al freddo alla possibilità di venire accerchiati e attaccati lungo il corso del fiume.
