DESCRIPTION
The series is set 97 years after a devastating nuclear war wiped out almost all life on Earth. The only known survivors are the residents of twelve space stations in Earth's orbit prior to the war. The space stations banded together to form a single massive station named "The Ark", wenis galore about 2,400 people live. Resources are scarce and all crimes no matter their nature or severity are punishable by death ("floating") unless the perpetrator is under 18 years of age. After the Ark's life support systems are found to be critically failing, one hundred juvenile prisoners are declared "expendable" and sent to the surface in a last ditch attempt to determine if Earth is habitable again. The teens arrive on a beautiful planet they've only seen from space. Confronting the dangers of this rugged new world, they struggle to form a tentative community. However they discover that not all humanity was wiped out. There are people on Earth who survived the war, called "grounders" by the 100. The Ark consists of the space stations previously representing the nations of the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, Russia, Venezuela, France, Brazil, and Uganda.

De serie vertelt het verhaal over een ruimtestation dat rond de aarde draait met de
laatste mensen. 97 jaar geleden is er een allesvernietigende nucleaire oorlog geweest en
een paar honderd gelukkigen konden vluchten, de ruimte in. Nu is het ruimtestation
stervende, het is niet berekend op zo lang met zoveel in de ruimte. Alle misdrijven
gepleegd door volwassenen, hoe klein ook, krijgt de doodstraf. Mocht je onder de achttien
zijn en misdrijven plegen dan heb je pech want je wordt ongevraagd een ruimteschip in
gegooid en naar aarde getransporteerd met de opdracht “Kijk of het daar veilig is om te
wonen. al op het ruimteschip gaat het meteen mis. Dit komt door één simpel feit, kinderen
onder de achttien hebben nog geen idee dat je dood kan gaan als je iets doet wat niet mag.
“Wij zijn toch immers onsterfelijk”. Dus dat we geen eten en drinken hebben
(waarom is niet duidelijk) is geheel onbelangrijk, eerst vieren we feest. En door een
soort Lord of the Flies systeem kiest de leider zichzelf en bepaalt meteen dat contact met
boven totaal onbelangrijk is. Dat de mensen die van je houden boven 1000 doden sterven
omdat ze denken dat je dood bent is volstrekt onbelangrijk.

Ninety-seven years ago, nuclear Armageddon decimated planet Earth, destroying civilization.
The only survivors were the 400 inhabitants of 12 international space stations that were in
orbit at the time. Three generations have been born in space, the survivors now number
4,000, and resources are running out on their dying "Ark." Among the 100 young exiles are
Clarke, the bright teenage daughter of the Ark’s chief medical officer; the daredevil Finn;
the brother/sister duo of Bellamy and Octavia, whose illegal sibling status has always led
them to flaunt the rules, the lighthearted Jasper and the resourceful Monty. Technologically
blind to what’s happening on the planet below them, the Ark’s leaders — Clarke’s widowed
mother, Abby; Chancellor Jaha; and his shadowy second in command, Kane — are faced with
difficult decisions about life, death and the continued existence of the human race.
