After conducting several trials with the settings, I've managed to find the sweet spot for file size without compromising the visual integrity too much and the quality of the opening and ending sequences. Initially, I was set on using CRF 26 with my standard settings. This approach yielded an average SSIMU2 score of 84, which seems decent at first glance. However, the lower percentiles and the standard deviation told a different story. The 5th percentile low hit 70, and the standard deviation was at 6. Not only were these numbers less than ideal, but the visual quality also left much to be desired. Moreover, the file size was edging towards 300 MiB for video alone, which is quite substantial given the resulting quality.
To address these issues, I decided to implement zoning in the darker and grainier segments of the video. This adjustment led to a slight increase in the average SSIMU2 score to 84.85, but more importantly, it significantly improved the 5th percentile low to 76 and reduced the standard deviation to 4. Although the average score saw only a marginal improvement, the consistency and visual quality in darker scenes were enhanced noticeably. The file size increased by a mere 20 MiB, a reasonable trade-off for the noticeable gains in quality.
