DESCRIPTION
100 Centre Street - Series 2 (08 Oct 2001 to 05 Mar 2002)
100 Centre Street is a creation of Sidney Lumet depicting the cold and personal realiities of the American legal system. Its original cast was brilliant and included Alan Arkin, Val Avery, Bobby Cannavale, Joel de la Fuente and Paula Devicq.
The show takes its name for the street address in Manhattan of the New York City Criminal Court and the Supreme Court of the State of New York. And yes indeed, the spelling is the British form "Centre", as emblazoned on the current signage.
The show aired in the United States on the A&E Network cable television channel from 2001 to 2002. Some called it a more gritty and accurate version of Law & Order. Some called it a direct knock-off. 100 Centre Street differs from Law & Order, however, as it focuses more on the personal lives of its main characters. The people we end up seeing at court are more on the periphery of the series arcs.
Episodes in Series 2 went into a bit more for each episode and extended story arcs could be used now there was an increase in commissioned episodes. Several characters were cut, a couple rather dramatically.
The focus in the second series went more to Cynthia's private defence service and the show's character links derived from there rather than such a large number of cases previously emanating from the DA's office. The DA still provided many cases, but those on low income and needing urgent legal defence they can't pay for, provided a much wider variety of plots and situations.
This editorial turn have been to ward of common criticisms of the time that the show was a straight knock-off of Law and Order.
But Creator/Director Sidney Lumet had nothing to anwwer to, really, having given us many of his own gritty police dramas many years ago with fine television and films like Serpico, Network, Murder on the Orient Express and Deathtrap.
Artists & Entertainment bought an 18 episode second series - five more episodes than series 1, but for some reason it just didn't perform well enough in the ratings for the executives, and the show was axed after this stunning and highly memorable second series.
