DESCRIPTION
The postwar trials of Nazi war criminals held in Nuremberg from 1945 to 1949 were precedent-setting legal events and horrifying exposes of Nazi evil. In particular, the first Nuremberg Trial - which featured Göring, Hess, Speer, Keitel, Jodl, Von Ribbentrop and other top Nazis - could be thought of as the 'Trial of the Century' since it established codes of governmental and individual conduct that endure to the present. Paul Roland provides a comprehensive overview of those dramatic trials.
To those unfamiliar with the Nuremberg Trials, Roland's book will be a valuable introduction to a complex subject. His first chapter - 'Why a Trial' - catalogs the horrors inflicted upon millions of innocent victims by the Nazi regime. Chapter two - 'The Accused' - describes the group of Nazi leaders called to account for their roles in Third Reich barbarism. Further chapters describe the trial's legal framework, the judges involved, the gathering of evidence to be presented, the actual trial, the verdicts, etc. Follow-on trials of lesser Nazi members are briefly summarized. The book is illustrated throughout with vintage photographs of the participants, Nazi war crimes, concentration camp scenes, etc.
This book is most useful and fascinating in its insightful and vivid descriptions of the defendants. If a reader is unfamiliar with Göring, Funk, Keitel, Hess, etc., Roland's book will be a revelation. The use of actual courtroom testimony, official documents and reminscences and observations by Allied participants such as Major Airy Neave, jail warden Colonel C. B. Andrus, psychologist Major Leon Goldensohn, Walter Cronkite, etc. bring the trials and personalities to life.
